Medieval Times Breaks the Law

Company-wide, employees are tired of being overworked and underpaid.

In 2022, the first two successful union elections in Medieval Times’ history took place.

In the Lyndhurst, NJ castle:

  • Show cast, knights, squires, and stable hands voted to organize with the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) on July 15, 2022.

In the Buena Park, CA castle:

  • Show cast, knights, squires, and stable hands voted to organize with the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) on November 10, 2022. These performers are currently on strike. Please do not cross their picket line.
  • Sound & lighting technicians voted to organize with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 504.

Anyone who’s ever worked at Medieval Times knows how aggressively anti-union this company is.

To date, Medieval Times has spent over $1 million in union-busting consultant fees. As a result, there have been over a dozen unfair labor practice charges filed with the National Labor Relations Board against Medieval Times for violating federal labor law.

Here’s how they break down —

In the Lyndhurst, NJ castle:

  • Medieval Knights, LLC did not provide raises to employees at its New Jersey location when it provided raises to employees at other locations, in retaliation for Lyndhurst employees' organizing; gave mid-year $1 wage increases to non-unionized employees but failed to give such raises to employees at its Lyndhurst, New Jersey location, to chill, deter, and/or interfere with the Lyndhurst employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act; held a captive audience meeting with a paid anti-union labor consultant **NLRB complaint issued on this charge
  • Medieval Times U.S.A. Inc filed baseless and retaliatory trademark infringement lawsuit against AGVA and MTPU
  • Medieval Times U.S.A. Inc reported MTPU social media posts on TikTok for trademark infringement **NLRB complaint issued on this charge
  • Medieval Knights, LLC discriminated against, took disciplinary action against, and ultimately terminated an employee in retaliation for his involvement in organizing the bargaining unit; and threatened disciplinary action against a bargaining unit employee for distributing pro-union handbills in the venue’s parking lot **NLRB complaint issued on this charge
  • Medieval Knights, LLC displayed discrimination and bad-faith bargaining by withholding wage increases from bargaining unit employees that it provided to workers at unrepresented venues **NLRB complaint issued on this charge

In the Buena Park, CA castle:

  • Medieval Knights, LLC committed unfair labor practice when its agent(s) helped circulate petition seeking to withdraw employee support from union **NLRB complaint issued on this charge
  • Medieval Times U.S.A. Inc. reported MTPU social media posts on Facebook and TikTok for trademark infringement
  • Medieval Knights, LLC displayed discrimination and bad-faith bargaining by withholding wage increases from bargaining unit employees that it provided to workers at unrepresented venues, and by interrogating and surveilling employees on the picket line.
  • Medieval Times U.S.A. Inc. filed a meritless/retaliatory lawsuit against bargaining unit employee by and through one of its managers

In the Schaumburg, IL castle:

  • Medieval Times USA, Inc., conducted mass layoffs of unrepresented employees in retaliation for Buena Park, CA's employees organizing with IATSE Local 504

Employers violate federal labor law in over 40% of union campaigns.

The National Labor Relations Board has filed formal complaints accusing Medieval Times of falling within that 40%, as indicated above. Hearings on these matters are scheduled to begin in October in California and November in NJ.

More updates to come.
